b. 1956
In its many forms, Greg Colson’s work often deals with the varied aspects and types of information that constitute living in our contemporary era. Whether the nominal subject is mapping, the results of a popular survey, or the modern news media, his paintings, sculptures, drawings, photos and prints highlight the absurdity and staggering volume of stimuli we intake on a daily basis.
Colson also embraces the physicality of art-making. His intentionally rough hand is visible throughout his oeuvre, both in the style of imagery, the construction of the piece, and the materials selected (e.g. plywood, tape, and found objects such as rulers, inner tubes, and condiment bottles). He uses these basic materials to re-present information normally delivered in a sleeker form to remind us of the rugged foundation from which our modern world rises, even as art and the industries constituting the majority of our economy become increasingly detached from “hands-on” labor.
Colson has exhibited throughout the United States and Europe. His solo exhibitions include Sperone Westwater, New York; Konrad Fischer Galerie, Dusseldorf; Kunsthalle Lophem, Bruges, Belgium; Gian Enzo Sperone, Rome; and the Lannan Museum, Lake Worth, FL. His work has been included in group shows at the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts, Germany; Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil, Mexico City; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Getty Center, Los Angeles; and many others. His work is held in numerous permanent collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Panza Collection, Varese, Italy; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. Colson lives and works in Venice, California.
